The Internet and My Tale of Two Crises

The Internet is our most dynamic new societal institution, developing quickly over the past 25 years from “Web 1.0” (providing static web pages with existing content) to “Web 2.0” (providing interactive environments for building connections between people, facilitating other societal institutions, and the “marketplace of ideas”). I think this is a good example, a good metaphor, for the direction we are moving (and should continue to move) in our entire society and its institutions, from top-down dissemination and control, to a more egalitarian exchange between a circle of equals.

Two Years of Lefty Parent!

Well its the anniversary of many harvest feasts, but particularly that 1621 event at the site of the Plymouth Plantation in Massachusetts where the English immigrants feasted with the Wampanoag Native Americans who had helped the “pilgrims” cultivate the land and fish, saving them from starvation. For me it is also the two year anniversary of the start of my “Lefty Parent” blog, now more than 250 posts later!

Shaken and Stirred

I had 69 metal staples after surgery
Taking off from James Bond’s iconic instructions for every martini he orders (“Shaken… not stirred”) I have had quite the adventure with the whole sequence of my bicycle accident, later loss of function on my left side, emergency cranial surgery to remove a large blood clot, and the subsequent recovery, a midlife crisis manifest, and a “reboot” of sort. As I learned time after time from my dad, life at its best is an adventure, not always fun, not always happy, but a compelling narrative worth living and sharing with others.
