I think maybe we may be working with different connotations of the metaphor "second fiddle". To me, the second violinist is still a key member of the orchestra, just maybe more in the support role than the featured first player. I do think the quality of my work output has generally been good, though as part of "staying off the radar" I have worked consciously to manage my supervisors expectations so that they don't expect more of me than I can deliver on and stay on my "mommy track". That said, generally I tried to deliver something of value, something of significant assistance to my boss and my team to better justify letting me set my own terms for my "rules of engagement".
